Diamond Foods, the owner of snack brands such as Kettle Chips, Pop Secret popcorn and Emerald nuts, does not do sufficient justice to its name. Unlike its namesake, this food company has placed little value on transparency since it was founded in 1912.
We have been reaching out to San Francisco-based Diamond Foods to discuss the sustainability of their supply chain since January 2011, but with little result. We have repeatedly emphasised the importance of the role they play in ensuring the sustainability of their supply chain and encouraged transparency in the communication of their efforts to stakeholders.
Cutting through the façade
Although the first step towards sustainability is transparency; regrettably, Diamond Foods has repeatedly ignored or responded inadequately to our requests for public disclosure regarding the sustainability of their products.
Furthermore, there is no readily available information or documentation on their corporate website regarding their sustainability efforts. Therefore, we are pursuing our call for Diamond Foods to provide a CSR policy that will be made available to the public domain. Although providing this information is only step one on the long road to achieving sustainability – it is a vital step.
What lies beneath?
We at Fairfood are eager to support Diamond Foods on their path to sustainability. With the use of our sustainability agenda, we can provide the company with a great deal of information about sustainable solutions and partnerships. We can suggest specific partners and information to not only create sustainability policies covering supplier relationships, production and trade, but also provide resources to implement and monitor these goals.
You too can join us in our efforts! We would like to know what sustainability efforts you would like to see from Diamond Foods.
Would you like to know if their snacks are produced sustainably? Then join the discussion and leave your suggestions in the comments section below.
