Sustainability Advocate (Internship) Africa (Based in Johannesburg)
Department
The Advocacy Department’s main responsibility is to motivate companies to increase the sustainability of their products, trade and production processes in order to promote global equity and development. Several strategies and forms of leverage can be utilised to help achieve this goal, including engaging in sustainability dialogues with food and beverage companies, e-campaigning and grassroots mobilization of the affected citizenry. This position reports to the Advocacy Manager Africa, based in Johannesburg.
Function
As a Sustainability Advocate Intern, you will be responsible for helping the Advocacy Manager Africa in motivating food and beverage companies to increase the levels of sustainability and transparency associated with their products. You will research companies that are to be approached and serve as a key contact with these companies. You will approach them and maintain contact by e-mail, phone and/or skype in order to create a positive dialogue and encourage them to increase the sustainability of their products.
Your qualifications
You are studying at or have graduated from an institute of higher education or a university or have acquired an equivalent working and thinking level through work experience. You have excellent verbal and written skills and you are able to work independently, but also a team player. It is important that you are diplomatic, but also persistent. Finally, you should share Fairfood’s Sustainability goals of fighting poverty and hunger. Familiarity with or knowledge of the food and beverage industry, NGOs and/or corporate social responsibility and sustainability is preferred. Experience in advocacy as well as fluency in one or more of South Africa’s official languages, French or/and Portuguese is a plus.

The position is versatile and flexible, but at the same time offers a great deal of independence and responsibility. You will have the freedom and opportunity to continue developing yourself and achieve tangible results. Additional benefits include free in-office lunches, reimbursement of transportation costs to/from the office, the potential to attend sustainable food conferences and travel to meet with food and beverage companies. Working hours are flexible, but a minimum of sixteen hours a week for a period of at least three months is required.
