The world’s population is estimated to grow to 9 billion people in 2050.
In order to support us and the environment we need a food industry that is sustainable from a human as well as an enviromental perspective.
At $4.8 trillion in revenue, in 2006, food and agriculture is the single largest global industry. In developing countries agriculture alone often constitutes over 50 percent of employment, 40 percent of land use, and 35 percent of GDP making it a sector of vital importance for social, environmental and economic development.
Nevertheless, the massive impact of the food industry does not always have a positive contribution to global social, environmental and economic conditions. Poverty, hunger and environmental degradation are rampant throughout the global food industry.
