What is Fairfood? Fairfood is an international non-profit campaign and lobby organisation, which encourages the food and beverage industry to make its supply chains more sustainable. In this way Fairfood contributes to the fight against global hunger and poverty.
What does Fairfood strive for? The production and trading of daily food and beverage products is fraught with unfairness. Fairfood is committed to the improvement of global working conditions, putting an end to environmentally unfriendly practices and making trade more fair. What does Fairfood do exactly? Fairfood lobbies towards food and beverage companies and encourages them to sustainable production and trade practices. To achieve this, Fairfood places sustainability broadly on the agenda. Thus Fairfood informs consumers and offers them practical tools to make conscious grocery choices. In addition, Fairfood works with international politicians towards sustainable policies. Fairfood encourages catering and other service industry companies to shop more sustainable. Fairfood also takes part in the public debate, and conducts international campaigns.
What practical solutions does Fairfood contribute? Fairfood forms a bridge between food and beverage companies and the supply of sustainable solutions. Sometimes these solutions can be linked to labels, sometimes to other successful sustainable initiatives. Fairfood offers the Fairfood Pocket Guide to consumers and wholesalers, in which a positive, buy recommendation for relatively sustainable products is given. Fairfood offers an (online) platform giving everyone the chance to have their voice heard regarding making food more sustainable. Hunger in the world. Fairfood is needed. 25,000 people die of hunger every day. That is 1 person every 3,5 seconds. In addition, 854 million people do not have enough to eat to lead a dignified life . As a result of the high food prices in 2007, a further 50 million people were affected by under nourishment. Yet there is more than enough food in the world for everyone. Fairfood attributes a large part of this problem to Western trade policy. And the solution will be reached by taking action here. In short, eat fair, beat hunger.
