What is Fairfood?
Fairfood is an international non-profit campaign and lobby organisation, which prompts the food and beverage industry to make its production and trade more sustainable. In this way Fairfood contributes to the fight against hunger and poverty across the globe.
Research
The Research department is Fairfood’s centre of knowledge. The department collects and organizes up-to-date information and knowledge concerning global trade and food- and beverage production. The central focus of the department is this research, which leads to Fairfood’s annual shopping guide with products Fairfood advises to buy or not to buy. The department is responsible for five projects: Fairness Criteria, Sector Analysis, Product Analysis, Assurance and Solution Analysis. The projects are led by six paid Project Leaders, each with the help of two to six unpaid Project Assistants.
Assurance
Fairfood asks brand owners of food and beverage products to be transparent about their production chains. By means of an annual questionnaire based on international standards, Fairfood evaluates run-of-the-mill supermarket products on their sustainability. Fairfood advises consumers what to buy and what not to buy in the supermarket. According to Fairfood, buyable products are those whose production processes are above average sustainable or make more progress in this field than its competitors’ counterparts. This means that the products Fairfood advises to buy are not necessarily perfectly produced or traded, but relatively better for people, planet, and profit.
The project Assurance aims at a higher lever of trustworthiness of the answers given by companies. The Assurance team asks companies for additional information to substantiate the answers given on the Product Fairness Questionnaire. The Project Assistant Assurance has to be critical about the information given by companies. The result of this research can lead to withdrawing certain answers given on the questionnaire by companies, or it can lead to the adjustment of Fairfood’s advise to buy or not to buy a certain product.
