Transparency shines ray of hope
In September of last year, Fairfood International launched a campaign towards the soon-to-be second largest snack food company in the world, Diamond Foods, demanding transparency concerning the risk of child labour in their supply chain. The company recently published a declaration on their website in response to a new law, the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act.
If it’s organic, is it also child labour free?
Prompted by our Wake up! Emerald nuts campaign, Laurie, a supporter, sent us an interesting and rather pertinent question. We’d like to share the question and its response.
Thank you for joining the Wake Up! call
We would like to thank everyone who has signed the Wake up! Emerald Nuts petition to Michael J. Mendes, President of Diamond Foods. An impressive 16,000 people have shown their support and signed this petition for greater transparency. We will definitely convey all your concerns to Diamond Foods. Please stay tuned to this space for more information.
Support streams in for wake up call
To support the spread of our campaign, ‘Wake up Emerald Nuts’ and reach an even bigger audience, Change.org the platform hosting our petition, has increased the pressure. A staggering 13,000 people have signed the petition! If you haven’t yet, sign the petition today.
Wake up call now on an App
Free2work, our partner in the ‘Wake up Emerald nuts’ campaign, will be releasing its new app on Friday, October 21st at the Global Forum on Human Trafficking. This app (available on the App Store and Android Market) featuring the ‘Wake up Emerald nuts’ campaign, has appeared on Al Jazeera, Forbes India, and CNN. It was also awarded “One of the Great 11 Apps of 2011″ at the San Francisco AppShow.
Emerald Nuts wake up call goes international
It’s been an eventful two weeks for Fairfood, with our ‘Wake Up Emerald Nuts’ campaign receiving international attention. The Huffington Post recently mentioned the campaign on their widely read blog, as did the Spanish language news site La Informacion and the Polish Green Network’s consumer website ekonsument featured it too.
Waking sleeping giants
Our wake up call seems to have stirred this snack food giant – now the second largest in the world. After the launch of our public awareness campaign, we received a ‘private’ letter from Diamond Foods, stating its concern about the campaign and asking us to take it down. It still did not give us the clear answer we seek: What steps does Diamond Foods take to ensure child labour is not utilized in any part of the production of its cashew nuts?
Wake up Emerald Nuts!
We have launched a campaign against child labour in the cashew nut industry and are requesting your support!
It’s the warm tropical countries in Africa and Asia which are home to the largest producers of cashew nuts. These nuts then travel around the world to be packaged and served to us by Emerald Nuts as the energy-giving cure to our dreaded afternoon slumps – at least that’s what Emerald nuts claims. But let’s take a step back. Not much is said about how these and other nuts are produced and precisely where they are sourced. Diamond Foods, the proud owner of Emerald Nuts, has neglected to provide this information. And we’d like to know!
Diamond in the rough
Diamond Foods, the owner of snack brands such as Kettle Chips, Pop Secret popcorn and Emerald nuts, does not do sufficient justice to its name. Unlike its namesake, this food company has placed little value on transparency since it was founded in 1912. We have been reaching out to San Francisco-based Diamond Foods to discuss the sustainability of their supply chain since January 2011, but with little result.
